    I chose to do a portrait based on a lighting design I did for a dancer last spring. I used rose and cyan in the show last year as sidelights, which gave some strong contrasts and really nice modeling of the dancer’s features. This is the first time I have tried to paint a portrait, and I know some of the proportions and alignments are off, but I think the color blending achieved what I wanted it to. I used alarzin crimson and white for the rose, and ultramarine blue mixed with cadmium yellow for the cyan. All darker colors were a mix of the crimson and cyan, with lighter shades having titanium white as well. I welcome comments on how to adjust the eyes in particular. I repainted them several times trying for a more naturalistic look, before taking them back to darker rose and cyan. This is what fits best of what I tried, but I am still not satisfied completely.

      It doesn’t sound like this is what you were going for but I really enjoy that the eyes don’t look exactly “natural,” as they fit right in with the rest of the image. I love your color choices – you were really successful in achieving highlights and shadows, and I am super impressed with the way you were able to make the figure pop out from the page even while placing it on a background made up of the same colors. Great job!!

      The style reminds me loosely of traditional Mexican art but with more muted colors. I think the tone and hue of the colors works really well and while they are complementary in nature they carry the same vibe. To me the piece seems solemn and dull with her eyes cast down but the strokes are stirring. Very well done!

      Some very effective parts. The neck and hair are popping up very strongly, because of a high contrast. Pale “tinty” background provides a nice depth. I do not share with you your choice of hues btw 🙂 Nicely done Lara.

    For this final painting, I knew I wanted to revisit the style I tried out in week 5. I drew inspiration from one of my favorite artists, Emily Jeffords, and her impressionist landscape oil paintings. I used several of the techniques and principals we’ve learned this semester including implied space by manipulating the saturation of the foreground, analogous color harmony, complementary color harmony, and implied motion. I really enjoyed working on this piece – it was nice to reflect on what I’ve learned this semester and it brought me peace during this very strange time.

I really like the whimsical quality of the close up, tilted picture (#1) even tho you lose some of the work you did on establishing the foreground. I think the details of the contrasting line of trees makes up for it, and it’s really fun.

    I was very saddened to hear of Annie’s passing and wanted to do something to honor her. I did not know her but I did converse with her via email while she was in the hospital. As my final assignment, I incorporated; analogous colors, complementary colors, patterns, and transparency within a picnic blanket design and florals surrounding Annie’s name.

    The process was time-consuming but the colors were straightforward in mixing. I enjoyed the assignment but I was still overcome with a great deal of sadness while thinking of Annie.

    For this project I wanted to experiment with different render styles and try some different render comping tricks than I usually do. I was aiming for a Borderlands-style render that’s kind of “faked” 2D, and this seems to be close to that mark. For the main subject I used a 3D scan of a horseshoe crab because it has a lot of details for lights and shadows to catch on. I used a complementary highly saturated blue and orange color palette, and a pattern in the background.

      Actually it is very challenging to work with such a cool palette. And some of the parts are very effective. My only negative comment would be about the tabletop. The color is too strong and creates too much weight. I would tame it down a little. Otherwise great work Bryana!

    I love sunflowers. I knew I wanted to start with a sunflower but wanted to visually create the variations of feelings they inspire in me. The right side of the sunflower represents calmness and stability and the left side represents joy, freedom and movement. For the flower petals, I used yellow and red as primary colors, then created secondary and tertiary colors for the striation effects. I also used these same colors and added the barest touch of black for the shading to help create implied space and give them depth. In order to create the implied sense of joy, freedom and movement, I used the same colors as the flower petals but used very controlled lines and colors with a minimal amount of transparency broken up with solid black and white lines thus creating a sense of motion.

    This semester I took both this class as well as an Intro to Painting class with David Mollett. Once that class, too, switched to distance learning, I began to have a hard time being able to find time to paint. With my children home, and no art studio to get away to, I chose to create this painting to be for both classes. In my Intro to Painting class, this is my Abstract Painting study. It’s on a canvas, not on mixed media paper like all of the rest of the assignments, and I do apologize for that. Creating this piece, I was very particular about what colors I wanted next to each other in order to make it pop. If I had more time, there are some changes that I would make, however I’m pretty pleased with it as it is now.
    My favorite thing to paint is abstract and I’m so excited to take all that I have learned from this class to really take my paintings to the next level.

    I was especially intrigued with our assignment regarding depth and how to show that with shading and changes in the size of objects. I also wanted to show movement and chose to do that by adding white to draw the eye and darker shades to show the movement between the two. This is a painting of a camping trip that we went on as a family and because I knew I was going to put a lot of time into it I painted it on canvas instead of my mixed media. This way I can hang it on my wall.I can already see some things that I would like to alter but over all I am pleased. I think my favorite part is the sky.

    I just finished another painting and I feel as if this painting does a much better job at showing all of the skill that I have learned in this class. This painting took me an extremely long time (probably 20 hours) and the skills that I learned in this class helped me immensely.     This piece started out with a girl who is a strictly raised respectful manner taught to be what a good behaved proper girl has to display and ignore all facts of what she wants to be. With the imagery of posing like a doll and being all perfect like the one she is holding, their doubts, and wondering about who she really is. The doll as a self-reflection of what others expect from her is a reminder of how her actions are needed to be. The cage is a locked emotion she is holding due to the fact of being told what to do. The cage shows a symbolic theory of breaking from the chains of society’s outlook of feeling confident enough to feel its okay to express who you are, without the comments or judgmental reactions of being in the wrong. Though the cage is a faded but still held inner deep inside her the colors surrounding her expresses her confusion of sadness through the dark colors but with a little light with bright tones all blended in with an ongoing conflict with herself overall wondering if the cage can be broken or she should go along with how others want her to be displayed.

    This piece was one that I did when I was feeling kind of sad. I feel like it is kind of showing in how the tree and sky are almost oppressive and dark with only light being shown through the tree. I tried to use analogous colors in the background that faded into a purple and red to make it look like its almost on fire in the distance. I also tried to create a heavy contrast between the light of the sky and the tree to highlight and create an outline of the tree.

    For this one I decided to go with a mostly analogous color harmony. Rather than creating a piece that would appeal to emotion I wanted to just create something fun. I used a dark background with a bit of blue in it to make the warm colors stand out a little bit more. I used warm colors for the wolf to give it a more energetic vibe, and tried to imply movement by creating lines of fire from the distance and rendering the wolf in an acton pose. I used different colors as well as different values of the colors in order to create the values in the wolf and used mostly saturated colors.
