Course Schedule
All assignment modules will be opened up on Mondays and are due by 11:59 pm Alaska Time the following Monday night. The reason for the timed release of the modules is so that students get feedback on each assignment before they complete the next one. All due dates listed below are the Monday night deadlines for the Spring 2020 semester.
January:
- Week 1 – Due 1/20
- Introduction to course concepts, including what painting is or may be, and how those perceived boundaries can be explored.
- Students review the syllabus carefully and should submit any questions during this orientation time to ensure clarity.
- Discussion of materials needed for class.
- Students create WordPress account so they can participate in online discussions at https://coloranddesign.community.uaf.edu.
- Post first introductory posting to introduce themselves to the rest of the class.
- Week 2 – Due 1/27
- “Color Wheel’ assignment.
- Week 3 – Due 2/3
- “Analogous’ color harmony assignment.
February
- Week 4 – Due 2/10
- “Complementary’ color harmony assignment.
- Field trip to University of Alaska Museum of the North, or local museum/gallery, to identify a painting that clearly demonstrates either analogous or complementary color harmony.
- Week 5 – Due 2/17
- “Analogous/Contemporary Painting Challenge’.
- Critique #1.
- Week 6 – Due 2/24
- “Reverse Ground Theory/Color Subtraction’ assignment.
- Critique #2.
- Week 7 – Due 3/3
- “Hue vs. Value’ assignment.
- Critique #3.
March
- Week 8 – Due 3/10
- First Friday field trip to local gallery, e.g. Well Street Art Co., 2 Street Gallery, Alaska House, etc. (For students not in Fairbanks, please plan to visit a local gallery in your town.)
- Midterm exam.
- Week 9 – Due 3/17
- Spring Break. (No classes.)
- Week 10 – Due 3/24
- “Color Pattern Shift’ assignment.
- Critique #4.
- Week 11 – Due 3/31
- “Transparency’ assignment.
- Critique #5.
April
- Week 12 – Due 4/7
- “Implied Space’ assignment.
- First Friday field trip to local gallery.
- Critique #6.
- Week 13 – Due 4/14
- “Implied Motion’ assignment.
- Critique #7.
- Week 14 – Due 4/21
- “Artist’s Choice’ assignment, part 1.
- Week 15 – Due 4/28
- “Artist’s Choice’ assignment continued, part 2.
- Critique #9.
- Week 16 – Due 5/3
- Final essay exam.
- Final portfolio images submitted via Google Drive.
May
- Final grades posted May 8th at noon.
